Doc Rivers explains why Sixers star duo has had success on the floor

USA Today

Article Summary:

“Ben has the ball in his hands actually more than any player on our team and that’s, I guess, one of the changes we’ve made, but he’s such a unique skill set and he does so many things well, we put them on 1 through 5 nightly,” Rivers continued. “We come out of timeouts and he’s guarding this guy, he’s guarding this guy, we run him as a facilitator, and we have him setting picks. Then we post him. It’s just amazing how many ways you can use him.”

Both have been great on the defensive end as they both have a serious case to win Defensive Player of the Year. Rivers raved about Simmons being able to guard anybody when it comes to the playoffs, and having Embiid back him up at the rim makes it even tougher. “Well, we can pick our matchup at least. Usually, your best defensive player can guard that position and you hope that their best player is at that position. With Ben, we can say, well, we’re going to put you on that position. We don’t care. Then we have Joel who’s a hell of a defensive player as well so it’s a good combination.”

Simmons will definitely have his work cut for him come playoff time due to the elite scorers the Eastern Conference offers, but as long as he can use his size and strength to his advantage, the team should be in a good position.
